Painted Around a Gap<\/h3>


A family get-together has been depicted on the central panel of this triptych. Enthroned at the centre are Mary, the Mother of God (right), and her mother Anna (left). Together they are holding the baby Jesus. Flanking this trio are two ornately dressed female saints: Katharine (left) and Barbara (right). Further on the outside are members of Mary\u2019s family. They are all joined on the inside of the wings by the kneeling figures of the painting\u2019s donors, accompanied by patron and guardian saints. Look how the sainted women on the centre picture are gazing, because some seem to have their eyes\nfixed on the empty space below the picture centre. That is where the altar cross once stood before the altarpiece. It symbolised the tree of life in Paradise \u2013 and simultaneously the family tree of the Holy Kinship.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
