A Star is born\u00a0<\/h3>

The oldest painting in the museum is also the one that has had the most far-reaching consequences. The artist has deftly combined two kinds of Byzantine Madonnas into a new composition: the standing figure of Mary, often shown in halflength, holding the baby Jesus on her left arm (\u00bbHodegetria\u00ab), and the seated Mother of God presenting the infant on her lap, front on, (\u00bbNikopoia\u00ab). The \u00bbNikopoia\u00ab (\u00bbBringer of Victory\u00ab) was a Marian icon that Justinian, the Roman Emperor of late antiquity, took with him into battle. This Italian painting may also have been transported from place to place \u2013 albeit in processions. It marks the beginning of a new kind of Madonna that was to dominate painting for a long time, and which you will also find later on from Lochner (Gallery 5).<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
